Tartan Trot 5k

Last year, a few of my AP students (Clarice Reid, Ben King and April Blad) were involved in a fundraising 5k run organized by their local church. About 10 of us made it out for the run, but this year I'd love to see a larger turnout. If you (or your parents/friends) are interested in coming out for the run/walk, just let me know in class and I'll give you a sign-up sheet (or you can register directly on Active.com by clicking here). The race will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 8:30 AM. The address for the church is St Luke's Presbyterian Church, 1978 Mt Vernon Rd. Registration costs $25 per person and comes with a t-shirt and snacks after the race.

Interdisciplinary Lesson with Dance

A special thank you to Ms. Edmonstone, her student teacher Lacy and Ms. Kent for sponsoring our classes' interdisciplinary dance lessons on Friday. This week students were introduced to Louis XIV, the absolutist Bourbon monarch of Early Modern France. While Louis is often remembered for his magnificent building project, the Palace at Versailles, it should be noted that he also strongly influenced the formalization and codification of ballet. On Thursday, the dance classes at North Springs were introduced to the historical aspects of ballet as they sat through a lecture in AP World History, while on Friday, the history students took introductory ballet courses. I hope everyone had a fun time with this activity!

Social Studies and Science Join Forces!

Honors Chemistry is partnering with AP World History as Ms. Queen and Dr. Moody look to reinforce Mr. Benschine's Scientific Revolution content. "This is a wonderful opportunity to bring history into science lab" says Dr. Moody, "and will highlight the timeframe of when some key scientific experiments took place, and also some of the challenges the scientists overcame". The classes will join together on Monday, December 6th and will include a short lecture and hands on experiments for the students. The students will take advantage of the work of Robert Boyle and make water boil at room temperature, and recreate the classic Evangelista Torricelli experiment and make a barometer.
